The Art of Being Wise

"The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook."
~William James

Every person who represents you in the business of acting will have an opinion on what to change about you. You need to know who you are in this business and who you want to be so you do not become tangled in the race to become something you are not... and know when you are becoming who you are more clearly.

A great way to figure out who you are is to determine which living actor or combination of two actors you are - and ask a few good friends or your acting coach (people you trust) if this fits. Then when you are taking your meetings, you can articulate who you are to your people. If they disagree, and you feel their interpretation of you is inaccurate, do not work with them.

If you're selling yourself short, and this seems to be consistent in your life, take the time to consider their perception. If you like their opinion, and you like the way the agency works, give them a try.

Above all, when listening to the critique of your appearance or talent, think of yourself as a product. Keep the personal hurt for personal relationships and remain objective. Opinions are frequent and merely someone's point of view. They are not always true, accurate, or helpful. Keep the opinions that help you become better and toss the ones that don't!
